The castle towering over the dual cities of Gars and Thunau served as one of the Babenbergers’ oldest bases at the end of the 11th Century, even for a time as a residence. The three-storey Renaissance section next to the medieval ruins has been partially restored recently. The art-historical jewel of the castle area is the part Romanesque, part Gothic Gertrude Church
For more than 20 years, the annual opera on the Babenberg castle ruins from July to August has formed the centre of the Garser cultural summer. There is always a special pleasure in the opera programme. The ruin belongs to one of the oldest castle grounds in Austria. The panoramic view and the acoustics are amazing, thus it is the most atmospheric open-air stage, which delights visitors with performances at the highest artistic level.
