Abbey Altenburg

Benedictine Abbey of Altenburg
Immerse yourself in the more than 850 years of history (Foundation 1144) of the Altenburg Abbey and embark on a journey into the past.

The Baroque abbey is the most sophisticated monastic complex in terms of concept and implementation. The abbot Placius Much ( 1756), the architect Josef Munggenast and the South Tyrolean painter Paul Troger shaped the look of the abbey.

Let yourself be surprised by the wonderful images, which Paul Troger designed and painted in Altenburg’s 9 dome frescoes. You will be surprised by which outstanding artist shaped this abbey into a baroque jewel of the Waldviertel.

Under the Baroque Abbey you experience the “Monastery under the monastery” – the medieval Kreuzganghof is the centre of this structure!

In the Garden of Religions you are confronted with the attitude of Christians to non-Christian religions since the second Vatican Council, or you can find a quiet place for your personal rest in the Garden of Tranquillity!
